Thirteen year old Bethany Hamilton is full of life, and practically a professional surfer. Having just won a surfing competition and bagging a huge sponsorship, life couldn’t have been better for Bethany. One idyllic morning, Bethany goes surfing with her best friend Alana along with her father and brother. As she’s lying on her board, with her arm dangling down the board, a shark attacks her and bites off her left arm.
The next few weeks that follow is a time of soul searching as questions about what lay in the future grapples Bethany. She has to overcome many obstacles, which include her learning to work with one hand. With grit and determination, she gets back to surfing. Her life then changes when she goes to Thailand along with her church youth group to help the victims of the tsunami that struck South East Asia.
The devastation physically and emotionally suffered by the survivors gives her a new perspective on life and helps her to appreciate life much more.
