Three Cups of Tea:
One Mans Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
By Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
VIKING Hardcover 2006
PENGUIN Paperback 2007 #1 New York Times Bestseller
This book inspires, moves and fills me with renewed passion to work for things I believe in. This is a story of a person’s campaign to use education especially girls’ education to bring development and peace into Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson’s book is an inspirational tale of a mountaineer who finds a remote village after failing to climb K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. He is cared for by strangers and he promises to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schools, with focus on girls education, that offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth.
There have been questions on how much is fact and fiction in this story and we may never know that. Yet this story is inspirational! It has an earthy feel of Pakistan, its beauty and struggles. Above all it showcases the need for girls and women being given a chance to education and health- a noble cause worth living for!
P.S. If you enjoy this book get hold of its sequel too- ‘Stones to Schools’
