Community Finding Purpose

Reflections:
What do you want to be remembered for?

What do you want to be remembered for?

The New Year has come. New Year resolutions often fall by the wayside in a few days because Change for the sake of Change is not motivational and challenging. Change should always be accompanied by Purpose.

Some Changes are added into our lives because of our situations or circumstances while some changes are brought about because of a change that happens within. The change of direction in my life happened because of an inner change that was caused by God. My aims and dreams had to be relooked at and I had to ask the question as to what I truly want to do with my life. Is it to make money, have children, retire, grow old and die or is there a far greater purpose than this?

Starting my career in computer marketing, I had my dream of making it big in life purely all for myself and my family. Which is quite a good dream to have. I wanted to genuinely be of help to my dad being the eldest at home. It was while attending a youth conference in the final year of my Bachelors that I was challenged with the reality of this world. A strong question that came to me was, “what do I want to do towards the hopelessness in the world?” strangely, that night the portion I read was about a prophet who was called by God for His work of redeeming humanity. The question from God to that prophet was “who will go for me, whom shall I send?” The prophet said, “Here I am, send me”. I felt God asking me the same question and it was my response to that question that brought me where I am today.

What about my finances? What about my future? What about my desires? Well, reflecting back after 20 years, I can say with no regrets that God’s plan for my life has been for the best. Most of what I dreamt and desired was fulfilled without any effort from my end. I had to learn to trust my life to the hands of the one who called me. It was difficult initially, but now this has become my lifestyle.

The best part of the story is God’s Choice of my wife who shared the same vision and call and is able to walk along with me in the journey of life. We have gone to unknown places, unknown situations with less or no money, but in such situations the God whom we knew led us. We wondered if life would be the same, when children come along. With three kids living in Bangalore it’s not easy financially. There has always been enough and more for our need, though not for our greed. Through this life journey, I have learnt to depend on Him who has plans for us, rather than our own plans.

To be Change agents in this society, change should start with our life’s aim, goal and priority. One simple way to make that goal and priority is to ask yourself the question, “What do you want to be remembered for?” If we need to live a life that is purposeful and not just exist, we need to give it all to Him this New Year and trust in God who said in His Word “I have plans for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you”. LIVE in the New Year, don’t just exist!
